Formula 1 has confirmed a 10-year deal for Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix from the early 2030s. The race will take place on a new, purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, southeast of Kigali.
The race will end F1's absence from African soil, which dates to the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Rwanda's agreement gives the sport a long-term route back to the continent.
For F1, the deal brings the championship to every inhabited continent. For Rwanda, it puts a 10-year international sports event at the center of its tourism and investment strategy.
Rwanda GP plans | Details |
|---|---|
Target debut | Early 2030s |
Location | Near Bugesera International Airport, outside Kigali |
Venue | New permanent racing circuit |
Designer named in reports | WurzDesign, founded by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz |

F1 says the Rwanda Grand Prix will join the calendar in the early 2030s. The 10-year agreement is confirmed, while the exact first season will depend on completion of the new circuit.
The latest reporting follows a public bid launched by President Paul Kagame in December 2024, when Kigali hosted the FIA General Assemblies and awards ceremony. Rwanda used that gathering to put its ambitions directly in front of F1's leadership.
A 10-year deal gives the project a long-term place in F1's plans. The next milestone is construction of the circuit that will host the race.
The circuit will be built in Bugesera, southeast of Kigali and near the planned Bugesera International Airport. F1 has confirmed a purpose-built venue, with plans for an FIA Grade One track. WurzDesign, founded by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, was previously named as the designer.
That makes the circuit itself a central part of the story. A purpose-built venue gives organizers the opportunity to plan the racing surface, spectator areas and access routes together, rather than fit the event around an existing street network.
For fans, the test will be whether the layout produces good racing. Strong braking zones, opportunities to follow through corners and more than one viable racing line would matter far more than an impressive aerial rendering.
Rwanda has an opportunity to create a circuit with a distinct identity. Delivering a track drivers enjoy and spectators want to revisit would give the event a stronger foundation than novelty alone.
The Grand Prix fits Rwanda's wider investment in international sport. When announcing the bid, Kagame highlighted projects including the BK Arena and Amahoro Stadium, linking that spending to tourism, employment and opportunities for local talent.
F1 offers a powerful international platform for that strategy. A race weekend brings television exposure, traveling supporters, sponsors and corporate hospitality into the same event.
The harder task is turning that exposure into lasting value. A successful Rwanda GP would need to support local businesses, develop motorsport skills and attract activity beyond its annual place on the F1 calendar.
Rwanda's progress puts pressure on South Africa's efforts to bring Formula 1 back to Kyalami or establish a race around Cape Town. Both have featured in the contest to secure an African round.
Kyalami has the historical connection, having hosted the continent's most recent F1 race. Rwanda has put a new venue and government backing at the center of its pitch.
The latest reports place Rwanda ahead. That would be a significant disappointment for South African supporters who have waited decades for their own race to return.
It also underlines the commercial reality of modern F1: a circuit's history can strengthen its appeal, but an event still needs the funding, infrastructure and organization to earn its place.
This is not the end of the road for Kyalami, however. Formula 1 cannot simply build a new circuit in Rwanda and consider the 'Africa' box ticked. If they really have ambitions to turn F1 into a truly global brand, one African Grand Prix will not suffice for over 2 billion people.
Lewis Hamilton has been one of the strongest advocates for F1's return to Africa, repeatedly challenging the sport to give the continent a place on its schedule.
A Rwanda Grand Prix would answer that call while opening a new destination for the championship. There is a clear sporting case for taking F1 to audiences that have spent decades watching it race elsewhere.
The choice of Rwanda also brings political scrutiny. In February 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo urged F1 to abandon negotiations over Rwanda's role in the conflict in eastern Congo. Rwanda described its military posture as defensive, while F1 said it was monitoring developments.
Those concerns belong in any assessment of the project alongside its sporting and economic ambitions. Formula 1 may not be the first sport to jump into bed with the Rwandan government, but few can offer the same global platform.
A Grand Prix would put Rwanda in front of a worldwide audience and give its government a powerful stage to promote the country. F1 should be clear-eyed about the influence that comes with lending its brand to the project.
Building the circuit is only part of the work. Transport, accommodation, staffing and event operations will all shape the experience for teams and supporters. The FIA also needs to assess circuit designs and inspects completed venues before issuing a licence.
The case for a Grand Prix in Africa is a strong one. Rwanda now has the opportunity to turn years of discussion into a race that earns a lasting place on the calendar. At the very least, this appears to be a step in the right direction as Formula 1 finally starts to go truly global.
