The Houston Astros, three games back in a wide-open AL West, host a Miami Marlins club that has come completely undone at the worst possible time. Miami owns a better overall record than Houston, yet the Marlins arrive on an eight-game losing streak that has erased whatever momentum they built earlier in the season. Houston, meanwhile, has won two straight and gets another look at a Marlins offense that has gone cold at the plate in the finale of this three-game interleague series.
Miami's Sandy Alcantara has been a consistent arm across the full season at 10-5 with a 3.89 ERA and 107 strikeouts, but Houston's Peter Lambert has turned in solid stats for Houston, sitting at 8-5 with a 3.03 ERA and 91 strikeouts. The deciding factor is where each team stands right now. Miami has lost eight straight and has not found ways to manufacture runs in that stretch, while Houston has strung together consecutive wins, including an 8-5 rout of these same Marlins on Monday that featured a Jeremy Peña grand slam and two home runs from Yordan Alvarez.
Home cooking and a red-hot Alvarez tip this one toward Houston. The Astros' offense has more thump at the top of the order, and Miami's bullpen has been leaned on hard during their recent skid. Alcantara has the arm to keep this competitive deep into the game, but we'll go with Houston to close out a sweep tonight.
