COLLEGE BASKETBALL

South Carolina enters with the cleaner statistical profile. The Gamecocks posted 74.9 points per game, 43.4% field-goal shooting, 31.1% from three, 78.1% at the line, 76.5 points allowed per game, 32.6 rebounds per game, an offensive rating of 111.1, and a defensive rating of 102.6. Those numbers point to a team that is better balanced than its opponent and capable of controlling the game if it avoids long scoring droughts. Stetson’s numbers are much more volatile. The Hatters averaged 72.0 points per game, shot 48.3% from the field, 25.0% from three, 88.9% from the line, allowed 85.0 points per game, and averaged 29.0 rebounds per game, with a 102.5 offensive rating and 111.9 defensive rating. That gap on the defensive end is the biggest reason South Carolina is favored, but Stetson’s free-throw accuracy and ability to rebound enough to create extra possessions give it a path to stay within the margin if South Carolina’s offense is merely average.
South Carolina should control the game and win outright, but the better value is with Stetson Hatters +20.5 because the projected margin is smaller than the market is asking South Carolina to cover. A projected final of South Carolina 79, Stetson 66 gives the Gamecocks a comfortable win while leaving room for the underdog to stay inside the number.
