Biggest Premier League Rivalries: The Top 10 Ranked

Manchester United versus Liverpool is our pick as the biggest Premier League rivalry, but Arsenal versus Tottenham sets the standard for a local derby. One is a battle over English soccer's hierarchy; the other divides neighborhoods, families and workplaces. Both matter long before anyone checks the league table.
With the Premier League returning on Saturday, October 10, club loyalties take center stage again. Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, bringing one of the competition's defining modern rivalries straight into the first weekend after the international break.
Our ranking weighs history, supporter intensity, memorable matches and significance to the Premier League. It is an editorial judgment, not a statistical index. The focus is on rivalries involving clubs in the 2026/27 competition, although their stories often began decades before the Premier League's formation in 1992.
Our verdict: The biggest rivalry overall.
Liverpool and Manchester United measure themselves against each other even when their immediate targets differ.
Liverpool's dominance in the 1970s and 1980s established the standard United chased under Alex Ferguson, who explicitly states how he wanted to "knock Liverpool right off their ******* perch" before his teams became the defining force of the Premier League's first two decades.
That contest for historical supremacy gives this fixture a reach beyond its regional roots. A win can become a reference point for years, while a heavy defeat follows players and managers long after the season ends.
Liverpool's 7-0 victory at Anfield in March 2023 is the clearest modern example. United had won the League Cup a week earlier, but six second-half goals turned an afternoon against their fiercest opponents into an enduring humiliation. The result mattered far beyond three points.
Arsenal's move from Woolwich to Highbury in 1913 put the club on Tottenham's doorstep and helped establish a rivalry that still shapes North London. The stakes are personal as well as competitive: finishing above the other club can become a season-long obsession.
Arsenal clinching the league title at White Hart Lane in April 2004 remains one of the fixture's defining moments. A 2-2 draw secured the championship during their unbeaten league campaign, giving Arsenal supporters a celebration in the setting Spurs fans least wanted to provide.
The rivalry also has a remarkable capacity for memorable games, including the 4-4 draw at the Emirates in 2008. Its place this high rests on that combination of daily local antagonism and repeated Premier League drama.
The Merseyside derby's origins are bound up with the creation of Liverpool itself. Everton played at Anfield before the dispute that led to their departure and Liverpool's formation in 1892. The clubs' histories have been connected ever since.
That proximity gives the fixture a distinctive emotional weight. Rival supporters can belong to the same family, and a derby result travels straight from the stadium into everyday life. The familiar “friendly derby” description has never meant the contest lacks an edge.
Steven Gerrard's hat-trick in Liverpool's 3-0 win in March 2012 and Everton's 2-0 victory at Anfield in February 2021 capture both sides of its appeal. The latter ended Everton's wait for an away league win in the fixture stretching back to 1999, making it a landmark despite the absence of supporters during Covid pandemic restrictions.
For much of the early Premier League era, United's ambitions extended well beyond a City side struggling to keep pace. City's controversial rise transformed the derby into a contest capable of deciding the championship as well as ownership of Manchester's bragging rights.
The 2011/12 season captures that shift. City won 6-1 at Old Trafford in October, then Vincent Kompany's header secured a 1-0 home victory in April that put them ahead of United on goal difference. City eventually won the title on that same tiebreaker.
The fixture also has individual moments that stand independently of the table, from Wayne Rooney's overhead kick in 2011 to Michael Owen's late winner in United's 4-3 victory in 2009. Its combination of local history and championship consequences earns fourth place.
Newcastle and Sunderland do not need a title race to make their meetings feel decisive. The Tyne-Wear derby carries regional identity, family loyalties and the prospect of hearing about the result until the next encounter.
Periods spent in different divisions interrupt the fixture without erasing its importance. When it returns, supporters bring the intervening years of anticipation with them.
Newcastle's 5-1 victory in October 2010, featuring a Kevin Nolan hat-trick, remains a defining Premier League memory. Sunderland added another significant chapter in December 2025, winning 1-0 in the first league meeting between the clubs for nine years.
Fifth place reflects the balance of this ranking, which also considers sustained Premier League prominence. For supporters in the North East, there is a convincing case that no fixture matters more.
Arsenal and Manchester United turned championship races into personal confrontations. Arsene Wenger and Ferguson competed for control of the league, while Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane gave that struggle a fierce presence in midfield.
The clubs shared every Premier League title from 1996/97 through 2003/04. Their meetings could determine who finished first, and the animosity grew with the stakes.
United's 2-0 victory at Old Trafford in October 2004 ended Arsenal's 49-match unbeaten league run and remains a defining flashpoint. This rivalry sits below the leading local derbies because its greatest intensity depended on two exceptional teams reaching their peaks together. Its influence on the Premier League's identity, however, is difficult to overstate.
Chelsea versus Tottenham has repeatedly shown how much pleasure supporters take in damaging a rival's ambitions. The most obvious example came at Stamford Bridge on May 2, 2016.
Spurs needed to win to keep their title challenge alive and led 2-0 at halftime. Chelsea fought back, with Eden Hazard's equalizer securing a 2-2 draw that confirmed Leicester City as champions. The match became known as the Battle of the Bridge, with its confrontations almost as memorable as its goals.
That evening explains the rivalry's place here. Chelsea could no longer win the championship themselves, but stopping Tottenham still carried enormous emotional value. Few Premier League fixtures demonstrate the spoiler's satisfaction so clearly.
Liverpool and Manchester City pushed each other to extraordinary standards under Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. City finished with 98 points to Liverpool's 97 in 2018/19, then prevailed 93 to 92 in 2021/22. Both championships remained undecided until the final day.
Those margins made every dropped point significant and turned their direct meetings into fixtures with consequences across the entire title race. Their rivalry developed through sustained competition at the top rather than a shared neighborhood.
That gives Sunday's meeting at Anfield an ideal place in the Premier League's return weekend. The fixture carries memories of exceptional title races, although the current teams must be assessed on their own merits. Eighth reflects its shorter history as an elite rivalry, not the quality of its best matches.
Leeds and Manchester United bring a cross-Pennine edge that does not depend on playing each other every season. Long absences from the same division have disrupted the schedule without removing the hostility surrounding their reunions.
Eric Cantona's move from Leeds to Manchester United in November 1992 gave the rivalry a pivotal Premier League chapter. He joined from the reigning English champions and helped United win the inaugural Premier League title that season.
For United, the transfer became a foundation of their success under Ferguson. For Leeds, it remains an uncomfortable example of strengthening an opponent they particularly wanted to beat. This fixture earns its place through the durability of the feeling behind it.
Crystal Palace and Brighton can seem an unusual pairing to anyone encountering English soccer for the first time. Their rivalry developed through increasingly heated meetings in the 1970s, with the managerial opposition between Terry Venables and Alan Mullery adding a personal dimension.
The clubs met five times during the 1976/77 season, including three FA Cup encounters. Repetition, controversy and competitive ambition gave supporters reasons to keep the grievance alive.
It lacks the global profile of the fixtures above, but the strength of a rivalry is also measured by what it means to the people involved. Palace versus Brighton comfortably passes that test and completes our top 10.
Manchester United versus Liverpool is our choice based on historic success, regional competition, worldwide interest and the importance both clubs place on the fixture. Arsenal versus Tottenham is our highest-ranked local derby.
A derby usually involves clubs from the same city or nearby area. A rivalry can develop through title races, repeated contentious matches or historical competition between clubs farther apart. Arsenal versus Tottenham is a local derby; Arsenal versus Manchester United is primarily a sporting rivalry.
The rivalry intensified during the 1970s through frequent competitive meetings and the tension between managers Terry Venables and Alan Mullery. It grew from events on and around the pitch rather than geographical proximity alone.
