Australia entered the women's 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the clear gold-medal favorite. With Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O'Callaghan leading a powerful lineup, the Australians had the talent and depth to challenge their own world record.
The United States, featuring Katie Ledecky, was considered Australia's biggest threat, while China arrived as the defending Olympic champion.
Australia ultimately delivered on expectations, winning gold in an Olympic record time of 7:38.08. The Americans claimed silver, giving Ledecky a historic 13th Olympic medal.
Here's a look back at the pre-race prediction, the leading contenders, and how the final unfolded.
The final took place on August 1, 2024, at Paris La Défense Arena.
Australia led throughout the race and finished 2.78 seconds ahead of the United States. China completed the podium, while Canada finished fourth.
Position | Country | Final Time |
|---|---|---|
Gold | Australia | 7:38.08 (Olympic record) |
Silver | United States | 7:40.86 |
Bronze | China | 7:42.34 |
4th | Canada | 7:46.05 |
5th | Great Britain | 7:48.23 |
6th | Hungary | 7:50.52 |
7th | Brazil | 7:52.90 |
8th | New Zealand | 7:55.89 |
Australia's victory was particularly impressive given the strength of the American and Chinese teams. The Australians controlled the race early and never surrendered their lead.
Pre-race pick: Australia to win the women's 4x200m freestyle relay
Australia was the strongest selection heading into the final, primarily because of its exceptional depth in the 200m freestyle.
The team had established itself as the dominant force in the event, winning the 2023 World Championships in a world record time of 7:37.50.
That performance made Australia the team to beat in Paris.
Three factors stood out before the race.
Few countries could match Australia's strength at the top of its relay lineup.
Titmus was the reigning Olympic champion in the individual 200m freestyle entering Paris, while O'Callaghan had won the world title in the same event in 2023.
Both swimmers were capable of producing exceptionally fast 200m splits, giving Australia an advantage over teams that depended more heavily on one standout performer.
O'Callaghan also defeated Titmus in the individual 200m freestyle final in Paris, demonstrating just how competitive Australia's leading swimmers were.
A relay requires four strong performances.
Australia's biggest advantage was having several swimmers capable of maintaining a high standard throughout the race.
Lani Pallister and Brianna Throssell provided valuable depth alongside Titmus and O'Callaghan.
The combination gave Australia a reliable lineup with very few obvious weaknesses.
That consistency was a major reason the Australians deserved to be favorites.
The American team had considerable talent, led by Katie Ledecky.
However, the 4x200m freestyle relay presented a different challenge from Ledecky's strongest individual events.
Her greatest success has traditionally come over longer distances, particularly the 800m and 1500m freestyle.
The United States needed four outstanding legs to challenge Australia's depth.
A silver medal was a realistic outcome, but Australia had the stronger overall lineup entering the final.
Australia's four swimmers produced a remarkably consistent performance.
Mollie O'Callaghan opened the race with a 1:53.52 split, immediately establishing a lead.
Lani Pallister followed with 1:55.61, maintaining Australia's advantage.
Brianna Throssell then delivered a 1:56.00 third leg before Ariarne Titmus closed the race with a brilliant 1:52.95.
Australian Swimmer | Relay Split |
|---|---|
Mollie O'Callaghan | 1:53.52 |
Lani Pallister | 1:55.61 |
Brianna Throssell | 1:56.00 |
Ariarne Titmus | 1:52.95 |
Titmus's anchor leg was the fastest of the four, confirming Australia's superiority in the closing stages.
The winning time of 7:38.08 established a new Olympic record, beating the previous mark set by China at the Tokyo Games.
Australia had finished third in Tokyo, making its return to the top of the podium particularly significant.
Although Australia took gold, the race also produced a historic moment for American swimming.
Katie Ledecky earned her 13th Olympic medal, becoming the most decorated American woman in Olympic history at the time.
The United States fielded Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden, Ledecky, and Erin Gemmell in the final.
Ledecky swam the third leg in 1:54.93, moving the Americans into second place.
Gemmell then completed the race to secure silver in 7:40.86.
The result added another chapter to Ledecky's extraordinary Olympic career.
It also demonstrated the strength of the American relay team, even against an Australian squad that entered the competition as the favorite.
Australia's gold medal was consistent with the strongest arguments supporting its chances before the race.
The team had the reigning world record, outstanding individual swimmers, and a lineup capable of producing four competitive splits.
That combination made Australia a stronger outright selection than teams relying on one or two exceptional performers.
However, there's an important distinction between predicting the winner and identifying betting value.
Australia could be the most likely winner without necessarily being an attractive bet at every price.
For example, hypothetical odds of -300 imply a 75% probability of winning before accounting for the sportsbook's margin.
At that price, a bettor would need to believe Australia's actual winning probability exceeded 75% to consider the wager worthwhile.
The original 2024 betting odds have not been included here because a verified pre-race price was unavailable.
The prediction is therefore evaluated on the sporting matchup rather than an assumed betting return.
Olympic swimming relays offer a different betting challenge from individual events.
Several factors deserve particular attention when assessing future races.
Having the fastest swimmer in the field provides an advantage, but a relay is decided by the combined performance of four athletes.
A team with four consistently fast swimmers may be stronger than one built around a single superstar.
A swimmer's individual 200m time provides useful information, but relay performances can differ.
Flying starts on relay exchanges can produce faster splits than individual races, where swimmers must react to the starting signal.
Comparing relay performances and team depth can provide a more complete picture than individual personal bests alone.
Countries may use different lineups in qualifying heats and finals.
A strong qualifying performance doesn't necessarily reveal a team's full potential, particularly when leading swimmers are rested.

→ Our Take: Australia was the clear pre-race selection, and its combination of elite individual talent and relay depth proved decisive. The 2024 final was a reminder that team strength matters more than any single swimmer's reputation. For future Olympic relay betting, lineup quality and proven split times should carry the most weight.
